Arrowtown local wins coveted Craigs Investment Partners’ “Road to the New Zealand Open” playing spot

Keen amateur golfer and Craigs’ client Rob Stewart-McDonald will be playing alongside professionals from around the world when he takes to the fairways at the New Zealand Open in a few days’ time.

Rob learned he’d won the sought-after spot in the Pro-Am Division when Craigs Investment Partners Head of Private Wealth and Markets Jeremy Williamson drew his name from a pool of regional golf club competition winners eligible for the prize.

The Craigs Road to the Open competition gave players competing in eligible Craigs’ sponsored regional golf events the chance to win one of two prizes – entry into the Pro-Am Division to play alongside a professional on the field (open to players with a handicap of 20 or less), or a VIP guest experience. Both prizes include travel, accommodation, and hosting in the Champions Lounge for four days for two people.

Rob was entered into the draw when he and son Max won the regional competition hosted by the Craigs’ Queenstown branch at Millbrook.

Rob’s Investment Adviser Clare Phillips made the call to let him know he’d won.

“He was so happy,” she says. “Rob’s wanted to play at the New Zealand Open for several years and we were able to share the news with him on his birthday which made it even more special.”

“I’m super excited to win the prize,” says Rob. “Playing in this tournament is something I’ve always wanted to do. Thanks to Craigs for making it happen. I’m looking forward to the whole experience – especially on my home course. It will be great to see how the pros go about tackling the course. Hopefully I can bring my A game!”

He will have support on the course from Craigs, with Jeremy Williamson competing alongside him.

It’s the second year Craigs has offered the spot in the Pro-Am, building the connection between its many regional golf sponsorships and its major sponsorship of the New Zealand Open. Last year, Titirangi Golf Club member Brian Cadzow’s name was drawn.

Brian says he was truly blown away by the experience. “The effort put in to have the team around the players who could socialise, get to know one another and become comfortable was fantastic.” He says highlights included staying on site and being immersed in the atmosphere of the event, and having friends and family watching him compete.

Brian’s advice for Rob is to focus on his shots, relax and make the most of the experience.

In addition to offering memorable client experiences and supporting one of New Zealand’s most prestigious sporting events, the sponsorship has significantly benefited community organisations.

“Our 20 local branches nationwide are committed to supporting charities and the communities they serve. Golf raises more money for charities in New Zealand than any other sport, and so growing our involvement is a great way to build connections with our communities and our clients while supporting charitable causes”
Head of Private Wealth and Markets

Last year, Craigs’ New Zealand Open tournament activations raised $25,000 for community organisations. This year, the firm has worked with tournament organisers to create more opportunities for players, spectators and viewers at home to support worthy causes.

In addition, Craigs is making scholarship donations to the player trust accounts for New Zealand’s top three male and female amateur golfers, proudly supporting the next generation of Kiwi golf stars to take their game to the world stage.

“Our association with the New Zealand Open enables us to give back to these talented players and help them take their game to the world stage. We believe these scholarships will help reduce any barriers they face and enable them to focus on their development and performance,” says Williamson.

The New Zealand Open takes place at Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown from Thursday 27 February to Sunday 2 March. You can follow Rob’s progress on the Craigs Investment Partners Facebook page.
